Truck windows replacement

Windscreen replacement in trucks in Germany : stages

  1. Preparation and disassembly of the corresponding elements (windshield wipers, hood, interior and exterior trim of the columns).
  2. Cleaning the contact point between glass and body from dirt and old glue.
  3. Degreasing the surface of the new glass, applying a primer to the joint areas for the subsequent application of the adhesive.
  4. Installation of the windscreen.
  5. Installation of trim and equipment already dismantled.

    Let us examine the scenarios that involve different types of work for windscreen replacement on a
    Mercedes, DAF, MAN trucks or trucks of other well-known brands.

The use of glue during the truck windscreen repair

Not so long ago, rubber seals were used to install windows in trucks and buses. But now, when Scania truck windscreen replacement or other trucks is required, specialists began to use special HMLC adhesives with increased modulus of elasticity and increased durability.
The benefits of using HMLC adhesives are as follows:

  • No corrosion at the bonding point;
  • They do not interfere with the reception of radio waves;
  • They add hardness to the body;

The waiting time after gluing for truck windscreens in Volvo and Renault is 12 hours, provided that a commercial two-hour adhesive is used; normal environmental conditions prevail (relative humidity does not exceed 50% and air temperature is within 20 degrees).

How glass is cut

How glass is cut

For cutting glass on trucks, steel wire with a square or round cross-section is usually used. The wire is threaded through the glue roller, and special devices are attached to the ends, such as a pull handle and a wire holder. The sharp end of the holder rests on the glue layer and retracts 10 cm from the glue penetration point, while the end with the handle is pulled in the other direction. Then the mechanics pull the wire inside the vehicle and fix it by pressing the holder to the glue layer. They repeat the process until the glass is completely cut out.

Glass bonding technology

Since the windscreen replacement for Iveco or DAF trucks is quite heavy, it is difficult to try on and install the glass without glue. Therefore, to facilitate the installation of the glass, washers or normal supports are used, on which the glass rests until the adhesive is cured.
The assembly and installation of the glass can involve 4–6 people, a winch with special holders on suction cups is used. It is important that the glass is placed exactly in the right place the first time. If you move it during the gluing process, the glue may curl or leak on one side. After windscreen replacement for Man, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo trucks, it is necessary to fix the holders firmly so that the glass unit does not fall down and break the adhesive layer.

Grouting after glass bonding

Most trucks do not have an external seal along the edge of the windows, therefore, to fill the gap, it is necessary to form a high-quality adhesive seam with a smooth and even surface.

 How-to:

  • glass and body are wrapped with paper tape along the entire gap;
  • fill the gap with excess glue;
  • level the adhesive layer with a spatula and carefully remove the excess;
  • a smoothing agent is sprayed onto the adhesive and the adhesive seam is smoothed with a spatula;
  • paper strips are removed before the seam hardens.

If a high-viscosity adhesive with fast action is used for gluing glass, a low-viscosity adhesive is more suitable for grouting, as it is easier to trowel.
We cooperate with workshops that use modern materials and equipment to perform fast and high-quality windscreen replacement on  Iveco, Volvo, Renault, or trucks of other well-known brands in Germany. We provide a guarantee for all services.
