Changing a tire on the 1st axle of semi-trailer on right side on A27 motorway near Bremen

At night, a customer from Poland called our hotline who was on a route in Germany. He had an urgent request for the tire changed on the right steering axle of his Scania truck. The customer looked us up on the Internet after looking at offers for mobile tire mounting on Google.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the truck was on the highway, where one cannot stay for long because of the risk of causing an emergency. When the police or the BAG inspectors arrive, the car will be towed, for which you will have to pay a handsome sum. If you aren’t lucky, a fine will also be levied. In Germany, the rules are very strict.

So why the driver called us immediately and asked for help is understandable. The problem is very common. Truck drivers very often turn to us to request a mobile tire service. Let us briefly explain why this is such a common problem and how we helped the customer. By the way, we managed to help - eventually - but one thing at a time. ↓

Why might a truck tire need to be changed urgently?

The most common reasons are as follows:

  1. Internal tire pressure. Manufacturers specify what level the pressure should be at to make tires last as long as possible. If the pressure drops, and you do not do anything about it and keep driving, the rubber will overheat and become damaged over time. We advise you to check the pressure every 2 weeks to catch the problem in time.
  2. Wrong tires. Each manufacturer provides clear recommendations regarding the choice of tires. If you put the wrong tires on the truck, the controllability of the vehicle will be reduced and the tires will be damaged much faster. For example, if the tire is larger than necessary, it will wear out the suspension, levers and part of the truck body faster.
  3. Even if everything is fine with tires, no one is immune from damage. One of the most difficult types of damage is a hole in the sidewall of the tire, because the result is a sharp drop in pressure in the tire. Replacement must be happened as soon as possible. In the event of a puncture of the tire, the car can still move for a while, provided that the nail is stuck in the tire. If it pops out, the wheel will lose air. It is dangerous to continue driving with a punctured tire because the cords can be damaged.
  4. Failure of tire geometry. This problem can be caused by improper operation of the tire. Driving at high speeds on a poor surface, overloading the wheels, or hitting obstacles while accelerating can damage the geometry. This can also be caused by a factory defect or unprofessional tire installation.
  5. Valve damage. On trucks, the rubber part of the valve can dry out with extended use, damaging the metal part. As a result, the pressure in the tires decreases, leading to premature wear.

Whatever the cause of tire damage, there is a problem, and it needs to be solved - either on your own or with the help of a mobile tire service.

Why can't you fix the problem yourself?

Some motorists will object that you should "fix" the tire and drive to the nearest repair store instead of ordering a mobile tire installation and paying too much money for the service. This is logical, but:

  • We would like to remind you that in Germany the rules are very strict and if you meet the police along the way, you will have to pay a fine for driving on a flat tire, and that will cost more than paying for a mobile service. There is also a risk that your car will simply be towed, which creates additional difficulties for the driver who is on route and delivering the goods.
  • Also, if you manage to get to the nearest service with a broken tire without “adventures”, it’s not a fact that you will be accepted immediately, but this is again a waste of time. The queue at the service station can even mean having to wait for several days ahead. In most cases, you will have to solve the problem with payment, since without a service station customer card, it will be difficult to pay for the work. Some customers who decide to drive to the tire shop on their own afterwards still turn to us and ask us to act as intermediaries when paying for German service.
  • Also, bear in mind that the client asked for help at night, and this complicates the situation at times. We work 24/7, but other services in Germany accept applications only during business hours and do not take on repairs on weekends and holidays.

How we solved the client's problem

The customer explained that he was traveling on the A27 highway near Bremen and needed a tire for his 1st axle on a semitrailer on the right side, which measured 285/70/19.5. Our employee accepted the request, and we contacted the nearest partner service. When our specialist took the tire for the steering axle to the customer, it turned out that there was a mistake. One of our employees who took the order had misunderstood the customer and sent the wrong tire.

We apologized to the customer, and after 30 minutes the problem was solved. We sent another professional with a suitable tire and replaced the part. Of course, we covered all the additional costs and did not pass them on to the customer. For us, it is important that the customer is satisfied, and if we make a mistake due to the heavy workload or the driver's tiredness on the night shift, we do everything we can to ensure that there are no consequences for the customer.

The customer's problem was solved even though the breakdown occurred at night. We completed the work, the customer was satisfied and went on his journey.
