Why trucks need an Umwelt sticker in Germany

Germany has a system of of low emission zones (Umweltzonen) created to improve air quality in industrial centers and transport hubs, aiming to protect residents’ health. Entry into these low-emission zones in Germany is restricted to vehicles that meet specific emission standards. These areas are marked by distinctive road signs and green zone maps, and the right to enter is confirmed by an environmental sticker, also known as an emission sticker, plakette, Umweltplakette Deutschland, or Feinstaubplakette.

Colors of the German eco sticker and euro standards for trucks

The color of the environmental sticker (Euro plakette) depends on which emission group your truck belongs to. These groups are directly linked to the engine's Euro standard. The color of the particulate matter sticker depends on the Euro class of the vehicle and its pollutant group.

As of today, 99% of environmental zones in Germany allow entry only with a green badge. That’s why older trucks with Euro II–III classes are no longer permitted to operate in central Berlin, Cologne, or Munich. Yellow and red eco badges are practically no longer issued.

Can you get a green sticker for a truck free of charge?

No, such an option does not exist. However, this kind of permit is not required for agricultural or special-purpose machinery, since they are exempt from Umweltzone rules. 

To receive a green sticker, the vehicle must either have a modern Euro IV+ engine or be retrofitted with a particulate filter. However, installing a filter is often pricier than the economic benefit of using an old vehicle, so in most cases it’s more practical to upgrade the fleet.

How to get a sticker for foreign trucks: step-by-step instructions

Trucks not registered in Germany that enter the country’s environmental zones must also have an environmental sticker.

It is issued only after document verification confirming the vehicle’s emission class. If you’re driving from abroad, especially from French-speaking countries, you may also know it as the vignette Allemagne — this is the same environmental sticker required for entering German cities.

What documents are required?

• Vehicle registration certificate or equivalent document from your country;

The environmental badge has no expiration date; it remains valid as long as the truck’s registration number stays the same. If the number or windshield is changed, a new german emissions sticker must be issued.
