Emergency Truck Tire Repair on the Road: Procedures, Liability, and Options for the Driver

Emergency truck tire replacement on the road is one of the most common situations handled by roadside assistance teams. Although this type of issue is considered standard, the way it is resolved directly affects not only whether the trip can continue but also the overall safety of the vehicle on the road. MT onroad performs all work strictly in line with current technical standards and legal requirements. We take full responsibility for the result, ensuring certified installation quality and proper inspection of the wheel’s technical condition. Our goal is to restore your truck’s readiness for a safe journey.

How does the roadside truck tire replacement service work?

Step 1. We receive a request from the client

You can contact us by phone, via messaging apps, or through the online form. To provide fast and professional assistance, please share your exact location, the type of vehicle (truck/trailer/axle), tire parameters (size, type, rim diameter), and the condition of your spare wheel. We verify the information, confirm an estimated arrival time, and agree on the scope of work and pricing before the technician is dispatched.

Step 2. Arrival and preparation of the work site

The technician arrives at the location, sets up cones to mark a safe working area, secures the truck with wheel chocks, and performs a quick assessment of the assembly: checking the fasteners, the condition of the rim and hub, and ensuring that lifting the vehicle is safe.

Next, a quick diagnostic check of the spare wheel is performed, including:

  • correct size and axle compatibility (including dual-wheel setups);
  • no damage or critical corrosion;
  • functional valve;
  • acceptable tire age;
  • tread depth;
  • load and speed indexes;
  • season suitability;
  • correct pressure, etc.

Step 3: Installing the spare wheel

The damaged wheel is removed, the mounting surfaces are cleaned, and worn fasteners are replaced. After installing the spare tire, the technician adjusts the pressure according to specifications, checks the fit, and ensures there is no vibration or misalignment. A short on-site test is performed.

After the work is completed, a report is filled out and recommendations are provided for a follow-up retightening after 50–100 km.

Please note! The replacement can only be performed using a technically sound wheel. If your spare tire does not meet the required parameters, the technician is not allowed to install it. In such cases, we will offer a safe and legally compliant solution according to German regulations.

Why do we request wheel parameters in advance?

When submitting a request, we ask for tire parameters so the technician can bring a suitable replacement in case your spare is unusable. Our team is always prepared, with all necessary consumables on hand. The final decision to purchase and install a new wheel always remains with the client.

When the standard spare tire cannot be used

Installing a wheel with defects or incorrect dimensions violates road safety regulations and legal requirements. In such cases, the responsibility for any consequences would fall on the service company, so the technician is obligated to refuse installation. This ensures that only technically sound and safe vehicles return to the road.

On-Road Truck Tire Replacement Options Available to Customers

1. If your spare tire is in good condition

If your spare wheel is suitable, the technician installs it in place of the damaged one. The work is carried out fully and in compliance with all safety standards.

2. If the technician records a fault with your spare tire

If the spare tire is damaged, severely corroded, incompatible with the axle, or unsuitable for the weather conditions, the technician cannot install it. In this case, he offers a new, technically compliant wheel that he brings in advance. Payment must be made promptly, within 10 minutes. Otherwise, police may consider the work a prolonged stop, requiring the truck to be towed elsewhere, which leads to extra costs. If payment is not received, the technician must end the service call.

3. Refusal to replace

If the client has no usable spare tire and refuses to purchase a new one, replacement is not possible. The technician leaves the site, and the call-out fee is non-refundable, as diagnostics and labor time have already been spent.

Recommendation

Before every trip, check:

  • the technical condition of your spare wheel;
  • its full compatibility with your vehicle.

Also ensure that the spare tire mount is not rusted and can be accessed quickly in an emergency. Loosening corroded fasteners requires extra time, which must also be paid for. These tasks are performed only within the truck tire replacement service call.

P. S.

We value our clients’ trust and are always ready to explain how our process works. It is important to us that you understand why each action taken by the technician matters and how it impacts the safety of your trip. If you have any questions, contact MT onroad — we are available 24/7.
