Truck breakdown on the autobahn: what to do to get help as soon as possible?

An unexpected truck breakdown can be a stressful situation for any truck driver. In such moments, it is important to stay calm and follow clear steps to ensure safety and organize efficient truck roadside assistance.

Here's what to do in case of a truck breakdown:

  • Be cautious: As soon as you notice that something is wrong, turn on your hazard lights & reduce your speed.

  • Find a safe place: As soon as the breakdown occurs, try to keep calm and bring the truck to a halt in a safe place. Ideally, this should be in the parking lot or a lay-by so as not to impede the flow of traffic.

  • Set up a warning triangle: Set up a warning triangle at a sufficient distance, at least 150 meters behind your vehicle, to warn other road users. Position the sign strategically for better visibility. Always leave your vehicle on the side facing away from traffic.

  • Safety measures: Make sure to stay outside the vehicle, ideally behind the crash barrier, and mandatory wear a reflective high-visibility vest until roadside assistance arrives. Keep your distance from the road and always keep an eye on traffic.

  • Find a truck roadside service nearby: Research a truck breakdown service for your location to get help quickly. In many cases, a quick online search or the use of special apps can help you find a reliable provider.

  • Contact the breakdown service for assistance. Call a truck breakdown service or mobile truck assistance immediately to get help quickly.  Find out about the costs and services offered by the chosen service provider to make an informed and a well-considered decision.

  • Communication: Keep in contact with the breakdown service to confirm the current location and receive any further instructions.

Roadside assistance is on the way

The truck breakdown service will assess the situation, make repairs or organize towing if necessary. It is necessary to provide basic information, including your location (GPS coordinates), the main point of the breakdown and send the technical passport of truck or trailer.

Onward journey after breakdown assistance

- Check the repairs: Make sure that all repairs have been carried out properly before continuing your journey.

- Provide the truck service feedback: Give the roadside assistance feedback on the aid received to assess the quality of the service and help other drivers.

A truck breakdown might be annoying, but with the right approach, the situation can be resolved quickly, and the journey can continue safely. In the event of an emergency, it is important to remain calm and ensure safety. You should also contact a qualified breakdown service as soon as possible to receive fast and reliable assistance.

Preventive Measures for Reduced Repair Costs and Enhanced Road Safety:

Implementing preventive measures and establishing a regular maintenance routine can substantially decrease repair costs by up to 50% while concurrently improving road safety and extending the lifespan of your fleet.

Comprehensive Vehicle Inspections:

  • Train your drivers and technicians to perform meticulous vehicle inspections before and after each journey.

  • Check for visible damage, tire pressure, mirrors, windshield wipers, windshields, brakes, oil levels, engine coolant levels, and lights.

Strategic Repair Scheduling:

Schedule repairs and maintenance during off-peak hours to minimize downtime and disruption to business operations.

Vigilance for Early Warning Signs:

  • Pay attention to early indicators of potential breakdowns, such as flickering lights, overheating, or oil check lights.

  • Prompt action in response to these signs can avert severe engine problems or vehicle fires arising from oil leaks.

Preparedness for Breakdowns:

  • Ensure drivers are prepared by familiarizing them with emergency contacts and protocols.

  • Safely secure the truck in the event of a breakdown and adhere to road safety guidelines.

Utilizing Technology for Predictive Maintenance:

  • Embrace new technological advancements like onboard sensors and digital systems for predictive maintenance.

  • These systems can detect issues in advance, facilitating proactive repairs and efficient scheduling, thereby reducing breakdown risks.

Adhering to these preventive and predictive maintenance practices significantly mitigates risks, ensuring consistent truck operation on the road.
